ICP is a combination of three theories: person centred, cognitive behavioural therapy and attachment theory. Integration is a desire to look beyond the confines of single school approach.
By bringing these three theories together ICP enables the therapist to deal with multiple issues that clients may bring. ICP takes socio-cultural factors into consideration and helps in working with clients from diverse cultures.
Person centred therapy prioritises a therapeutic relationship with clients that promotes trust, empathy, congruence and respect. It works with feelings, emotions and in the present. Person centred therapy empowers the clients to explore the 'self' and the 'self concept'.
Attachment theory explores how we form early relationships and attachments to others and how they impact on us in adulthood. This enables the client to develop and gain self awareness on how to form better relationships. Further information on ICP can be found at www.bacp.co.uk.
